Yale Model United Nations Conference

January 21-24, Dr. McGlathery and 19 student delegates from the Pope Francis Preparatory School Model United Nations Club participated in the Yale Model United Nations Conference, which took place virtually and brought together approximately 2200 students from more than 40 countries to debate issues of global importance. 

 

Senior Olivia Schonagel won the Outstanding Delegate Award on her Human Rights Council committee, representing the Dominican Republic in writing, sponsoring, and successfully passing resolutions on preventing violence toward female refugees (while protecting the right to life) and on health care as a human right! Her committee had over 100 student delegates participating.

 

Junior Malcolm Mahoney won an Honorable Mention Award as one of the top 5 delegates on his United Nations Environmental Programme committee of over 100 student delegates. Malcolm represented the United States of America

and helped write, sponsor, and pass a resolution prioritizing economic development in the midst of environmental concerns.

Olivia and Malcolm are Co-Secretaries-General of the Pope Francis Preparatory School Model United Nations Club and have now won 5 Model UN awards between them. Other standout performances were turned in by sophomore Maxwell Austin, who successfully wrote and sponsored two passing resolutions, representing Nigeria on the United Nations Development Programme committee; sophomore Jessica Kenyon, representing Guinea on the African Union committee,who wrote and sponsored a resolution that passed, and junior Eric Jachym and sophomore Liam Russell, who served on the Chinese Politburo committee that debated the future of Hong Kong and wrote and passed five directives. Eric is Director-General of the PFPS Model UN Club, and Jessica serves as the club’s Under-Secretary-General for Outreach. All the students who participated in this year’s Yale Model UN Conference represented PFPS admirably and made Cardinal Nation proud!
